How to Set Up and Secure Your Wi-Fi Network

Wireless broadband

Wireless broadband

For someone who is not familiar with setting up a Wi-Fi network or with some computer terms, it can come quite as a challenge to do a Wi-Fi setup. The task of installing these internet system tools can be hard especially when you have to brush on your skills in technology. Yet, as computer and internet technology becomes more sophisticated and very common, a home without a wireless or home network can become restrictive to guests- many of the people now bring their laptops and other internet-ready mobile devices to their friend’s house so that they can stay online and be updated. With this kind of no Wi-Fi network scenario, it will really be hard for them.

To sum it up, there are two essential networks that one must install. The first one is the LAN or Local Area Network. LAN includes your internet router, your desktop, laptop and other mobile devices that you wish to connect to. The other network is the WAN or wide area network. WAN refers to the universal internet or the World Wide Web.

In usual cases, you need to have an internet service provider (ISP) which will provide you the internet service that you need. The internet service provider is part of the WAN. It is up to your type of connection plan with the internet service provider. ISPs can connect to your LAN to the WAN via a cable connection; a satellite connection; and DSL (Direct Service Link). Satellite makes use of the radio wave signal while DSL connects to the phone line. The high-speed internet is provided by the cable link which utilizes your television system.

The next step is to install your LAN which is easy. You need to supply an internet router. The router is the mediator of the WAN to the LAN which then connects to your laptops and other mobile gadgets. Routers are available with Ethernet cables or in wireless types. Nowadays, most routers are programmed to do both. It is important that you configure your wireless signal so that it will be a Wi-Fi secure internet connection. When you set up the Wi-Fi network, the network is in a default configuration and is accessible to anyone. Although this type of Wi-Fi network is convenient this poses a threat to your internet security. You run the risk of having hackers read most of your confidential data that you send and receive.

In order to set up a secure wireless network, you can create your own password key that only you and your allowed guests to your internet connection can access your IP address.

Most of the broadband providers give a free wireless router with each broadband package you take. They usually are already setup and secured, so you don’t have to worry about this anymore.
